This year\u2019s event showcased keynote speakers and panelists from private sector companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.<\/p>\n<h4>Paid Six-Week Fellowships for Military Spouses<\/h4>\n<p>Booz Allen Hamilton Executive Vice President Andrea Inserra announced that Booz Allen Hamilton is funding 100 scholarships for six-week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/fellowships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">military spouse fellowships<\/a>. In addition to Booz Allen Hamilton, the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International Foundation (HSMAI Foundation) and Lockheed Martin are funding scholarships that will be offered in Hawaii, San Antonio, northern Virginia, and San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re committed to helping military spouses build and sustain their careers no matter where military life takes them,\u201d Inserra said during the announcement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3497 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Booz-Allen-Hamilton-announces-Military-Spouse-Fellowships.jpg\" alt=\"Hiring Our Heroes announced several new initiatives and partnerships at this year\u2019s Military Spouse Employment Summit.\" width=\"800\" height=\"433\"><\/p>\n<p>These paid fellowships will help ensure that military spouses get an immediate foot in the door with local employers and remove one of the biggest barriers to employment \u2014 gaps in employment history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to open the door to military spouses. Every company and nonprofit can chip in and support this,\u201d Inserra said.<\/p>\n<p>More information about these fellowships, including application deadlines, will be available in the coming months.<\/p>\n<h4>Connect Military Spouses with Federal Employment<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cI have lived through PCSing while supporting my husband and trying to build my career,\u201d Cheryl Mason, chairman of the Board of Veterans\u2019 Appeals, told a reception of military spouses, government officials, and business representatives.<\/p>\n<p>As a military spouse herself, Mason was pleased to announce a partnership between the Department of Veterans Affairs and Hiring Our Heroes. The goal of this partnership is to connect more military spouses with federal employment.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the Board of Veterans\u2019 Appeals is the only VA entity who is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/msepjobs.militaryonesource.mil\/msep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Military Spouse Employment Partnership<\/a>. The Board of Veterans\u2019 Appeal employs more than 30 military spouses.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the board &#8212; in collaboration with the Veterans Experience Office and Office of Human Resources and Administration &#8212; will lead an effort focused on the experience, skills, and values that military spouses and veteran family members bring to their jobs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3505\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3505\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3505 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2020-Military-Spouse-Employment-Summit-Save-the-Date.jpg\" alt=\" width=\" 800\"=\"\" height=\"800\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Missed the third annual Military Spouse Employment Summit? Save the date for the 2020 MSES.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This effort utilizes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/one-year-trump-executive-order-military-spouses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Military Spouse Noncompetitive Appointing Authority<\/a> to hire military spouses and develop telework and remote work options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis type of intergovernmental collaboration to promote the hiring and retention of military spouses, is important not only for current servicemen and women and their families, but for future generations,\u201d said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. \u201cMilitary spouses bring a unique perspective to the federal workplace, and I am proud that VA is leading the charge in this area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3495 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Board-of-Veterans-Appeals-Announcement.jpg\" alt=\"Hiring Our Heroes announced several new initiatives and partnerships at this year\u2019s Military Spouse Employment Summit.\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\"><\/p>\n<p>Hiring Our Heroes is establishing a dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/military-spouse-professional-network\/connect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Military Spouse Professional Network<\/a> focused on connecting military spouses with career development and opportunities within the federal government through this partnership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of our military families are dual-income households, like most American families, and this partnership is an important step toward making a dual-income military family a sustainable reality with public sector careers,\u201d said Eric Eversole, vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and president of Hiring Our Heroes.<\/p>\n<h4>Identify Barriers to Entrepreneurship<\/h4>\n<p>During a fireside chat between Grow with Google\u2019s Military and Veteran Affairs Lead Bronagh Friel and Senior Director of the Military Spouse Program at Hiring Our Heroes Elizabeth O\u2019Brien at the Military Spouse Employment Summit, Friel announced that Grow with Google is funding a macro study to identify barriers and ease access to entrepreneurship, remote work, and upskilling for military spouses.<\/p>\n<p>Grow with Google is an initiative to create economic opportunity for all Americans by sharing free digital tools, training, and expertise. Grow with Google shares their tools through free resources, flexible programs, and in-person workshops.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3493 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Grow-with-Google-Announcement-at-Military-Spouse-Employment-Summit.jpg\" alt=\"Hiring Our Heroes announced several new initiatives and partnerships at this year\u2019s Military Spouse Employment Summit.\" width=\"800\" height=\"486\"><\/p>\n<p>Recently, Grow with Google turned an eye to entrepreneurship and remote work opportunities for military spouses.<\/p>\n<p>Friel explained how Grow with Google team members went looking for research related to this topic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we couldn\u2019t find the answers when we were researching, we turned to Liz,\u201d Friel said.<\/p>\n<p>This partnership includes a deep dive into these topics through a macro study. The information analyzed will be released in a white paper to policymakers, employers and military spouses.<\/p>\n<h4>Resources for Military Spouses to Work Remotely for Their Small-Business Employers<\/h4>\n<p>During the inaugural Military Spouse Impact Awards Celebration Dinner that followed the summit, Military Officers Association of America CEO and President Dana Atkins, Microsoft\u2019s Chief of Staff and Business Manager for Military Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/like-knucklehead-dropped-papers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danny Chung<\/a> and O\u2019Brien announced a telework grant that will provide workstations for military spouses.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft will supply the hardware and software for the Military Spouse Remote\/Telework Pilot Program.<\/p>\n<p>To apply for the pilot program, spouses must prove military relationship and fill out the&nbsp;Remote Work Grant Application. Active duty military spouses must be employed full time with a small-business employer and PCSing within three to six months of applying. They must also have approval from their company in order to submit the application.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this program, we hope to provide military spouses and their employers with the tools to telecommute, thus keeping military spouses in the workforce,\u201d Atikins said.<\/p>\n<h3>Our inaugural Military Spouse Impact Awards recognized the achievements community leaders are making in military spouse employment.
