{"id":8143,"date":"2024-03-14T15:24:29","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T19:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/?p=8143"},"modified":"2025-04-02T15:45:26","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T19:45:26","slug":"veterans-affairs-signs-4plus1-commitment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/stories\/veterans-affairs-signs-4plus1-commitment\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018These Commitments Will Make a Real Difference:\u2019 VA Signs the 4+1 Commitment to Support Military Spouses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs took a historic step to tackle employment barriers for military spouses by becoming the first federal agency to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-makes-historic-commitments-to-hire-and-support-military-spouses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sign the 4+1 Commitment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a military spouse, I know firsthand that these commitments will make a real difference,\u201d said VA Chief of Staff Kimberly Jackson. \u201cMilitary spouses are some of the most talented and dedicated professionals in the public and private sector, and by making these commitments, VA will be better positioned to recruit and retain these public servants as we execute our nation\u2019s most sacred obligation: caring for veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-related-hiring-our-heroes-blue-star-families-invite-employers-to-adopt-military-spouse-employment-policies\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/stories\/4plus1-commitment-event-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hiring Our Heroes, Blue Star Families Invite Employers to Adopt Military Spouse Employment Policies<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u202f4+1 Commitment: The Formula for Military Spouse Success is a first-of-its-kind, nationwide effort aimed at reducing the 21% military spouse unemployment rate. It is presented by Blue Star Families and Hiring Our Heroes in partnership with the Department of Defense Military Spouse Employment Partnership. The initiative was launched as part of Blue Star Families\u2019 Do Your Part campaign, made possible by craig newmark philanthropies, in December 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hiring Our Heroes is working to have 1,000 signatories before the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commitment, championed by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, is a voluntary commitment by employers to adopt at least one of the following military spouse employment policies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Facilitate job transferability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offer remote or telework<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offer flexible work hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide paid or permissive Permanent Change of Station (PCS) leave<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">+1: Consider joining an existing government spouse employment program\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VA committed to all four policies, as well as extending leave-without-pay status to military spouses whose active-duty service members receive PCS orders. <em>\u00a0<\/em>Also, the VA has been a part of the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) since 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo build the strongest possible workforce to serve our nation\u2019s heroes, we need to hire and support military spouses \u2013 many of whom are veterans themselves,\u201d said VA Secretary Denis McDonough. \u201cWe at VA are proud to make these commitments and support our nation\u2019s military spouses every way we can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"
