{"id":765,"date":"2019-01-24T21:43:19","date_gmt":"2019-01-25T05:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/career-summit-a-military-family-hiring-event\/"},"modified":"2021-08-23T16:14:23","modified_gmt":"2021-08-23T20:14:23","slug":"career-summit-a-military-family-hiring-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/stories\/career-summit-a-military-family-hiring-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Career Summit: A Military Family Hiring Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3030\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/veteran.png\" alt=\"Hiring Our Heroes Career Summits are open to service members and their spouses and will take place at 26 military installations throughout the world this year. \" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Service members and\u00a0military\u00a0families selflessly serve our country, often uprooting from one location to the next\u00a0while\u00a0facing unknowns with each move making it challenging to build\u00a0personal and professional networks.<\/p>\n<p>For the past five years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/three-reasons-employers-love-hiring-heroes-transition-summits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our Transition Summits<\/a> have served as an opportunity for those departing the military to gain insight into the civilian sector, network with employers, and get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PatrickMurphyPA\/videos\/helping-transitioning-troops-spouses-with-hiring-our-heroes-leftoftransition\/374519639691627\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#LeftOfTransition<\/a>. We\u2019ve learned that career preparation is a family conversation and is most successful when planning begins well before the military exit date.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to better serve the entire military community, we are re-branding Transition Summits to Career Summits. This isn\u2019t merely a name change, it is a change in perspective. <strong>Career planning is a process, not an event<\/strong>, and requires dedicated time and effort to achieve the desired results. Both service members and spouses need access to as many resources as possible regardless of their time in service or affiliation with the military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past eight years, Hiring Our Heroes learned a lot about how to help bridge the gap between military service and civilian careers.\u00a0 We focused on creating and delivering events targeting service members in transition to accommodate the increased number of those departing the military during force reductions. Through collaborative efforts, veteran unemployment dropped from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/archives\/vet_03202012.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">8.3% in 2011<\/a> to nearly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/vet.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> 3.7% in 2017<\/a>,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/career-summits-are-for-the-entire-military-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marnie Holder<\/a>, director of Career Summits at Hiring Our Heroes.<\/p>\n<h4>Related: \u201cYour network should be something you\u2019re always investing in no matter where you are or what you\u2019re doing.\u201d \u2013Marnie Holder, Director of Career Summits &amp; Virtual Events on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/career-summits-are-for-the-entire-military-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Episode 122 of the Sitrep podcast<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>As the program progressed, it was clear there needed to be a way for the event to be more inclusive of the whole family, especially since spousal unemployment and underemployment negatively impacting the retention and readiness of our military.<\/p>\n<p>Our events, no matter the title, have always been open to the entire military community. However, the \u201cTransition Summits\u201d title itself deterred many spouses from attending, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/military-spouse-programs-hit-the-road\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">military spouse employment<\/a> being four times below the national average and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2YtbNte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">70% of spouses<\/a> holding positions where their education, experience, and knowledge is not fully applied.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3031 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Summit-1-300x200.png\" alt=\"Hiring Our Heroes Career Summits are open to service members and their spouses and will take place at 26 military installations throughout the world this year. \" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/>\u201cWe discovered the impact of military spouse under and unemployment on retention and readiness of the force. It became evident that in order to sustain an all-volunteer force, we needed to facilitate a seamless shift from military service to meaningful careers in order to recruit the next generation all-volunteer force and ensure military spouses had career opportunities throughout and after their military member\u2019s service to the nation,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/military-spouse-programs-hit-the-road\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elizabeth O\u2019Brien<\/a>, senior director of the Military Spouse Program at Hiring Our Heroes.<\/p>\n<p>For the hundreds of employers who come to our hiring events on military installations, the majority are equally committed to veteran and military spouse employment. The <strong>transition to \u201cCareer Summits\u201d helps provide employers with access to the\u00a0entire military community<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/three-reasons-employers-love-hiring-heroes-transition-summits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3 Reasons Employers Love Hiring Our Heroes Career Summits<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cAll these factors combined led us to change the title from &#8216;Transition Summit&#8217; to &#8216;Career Summit&#8217; events designed for both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/service-members\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">service members<\/a> and military spouses regardless of their status in or affiliation with the military. Our goal at a Career Summit is to educate, inform, inspire and connect.
