{"id":5899,"date":"2023-06-26T17:28:32","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T21:28:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/?p=5899"},"modified":"2023-06-26T17:41:20","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T21:41:20","slug":"2023-mses-recap-military-spouse-hiring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/stories\/2023-mses-recap-military-spouse-hiring\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We Need More Companies\u2019: Hiring Our Heroes Encourages More Employers to Build Career Pathways for Military Spouses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the national unemployment rate sits at a 50-year low, Hiring Our Heroes leaders want employers to know military spouse unemployment remains at 21%, which is alarmingly high for a talent pool of highly motivated and highly educated individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address the causes to military spouse employment inequities, Hiring Our Heroes hosted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uschamberfoundation.org\/event\/7th-annual-military-spouse-employment-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Military Spouse Employment Summit<\/a>. Under the summit\u2019s theme of \u201cCommunities, Partners, and Progress,\u201d employers and stakeholders demonstrated the progressive impact communities around the country can have on the professional advancement of military spouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also encouraged employers who aren\u2019t currently involved in military spouse recruitment and retention programs to join the collective mission to support America\u2019s military families. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe truth is we need more companies to come alongside us,\u201d said Hiring Our Heroes Executive Director Elizabeth O\u2019Brien. \u201cOur success depends on the collective efforts of everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/HOH-Executive-Director-speaks-at-MSES-560x320-1.jpg\" alt=\"Elizabeth O'Brien speaks at summit\" class=\"wp-image-5886\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/HOH-Executive-Director-speaks-at-MSES-560x320-1.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/HOH-Executive-Director-speaks-at-MSES-560x320-1-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Hiring Our Heroes Executive Director Elizabeth O&#8217;Brien speaks to audience members at the 7th Annual Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Employment Summit. Kirkpatrick \/ \u00a9 U.S. Chamber of Commerce)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to sharing best practices, summit panelists outlined:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Advantages of hosting a military spouse fellow at no cost through the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/mscap-3-reasons-hire-a-military-spouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> DoD-funded Military Spouse Career Advancement Pilot (MSCAP)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Free resources for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/resources\/2023-mses-collaboration-with-us-sba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">military spouses interested in entrepreneurship<\/a> as a career pathway<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Military spouse employment\u2019s impact on national security and why this issue matters to the Department of Defense and private sector<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We Want Military Spouses to Work for Us<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USAA Chief Diversity and Sustainability Officer Tara Leweling explained the connection between national security and military spouse employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know the financial health of military families is deeply connected to national security, and we know military spouse unemployment and underemployment deeply affect the financial condition of military families,\u201d she said. \u201cAs we think about how we can best serve our country \u2013 no matter where we sit \u2013 military spouse employment must be top of mind every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we think about how we can best serve our country \u2013 no matter where we sit \u2013 military spouse employment must be top of mind every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Tara Leweling, Chief Diversity and Sustainability Officer, USAA<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCorporate culture is an important component for employers working to create a recruitment pipeline of highly qualified military spouses,\u201d said Jamie Gayton, Executive Vice President of Member Relations &amp; Global Fixed Assets at PenFed Credit Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know there are deployments. We know there are PCS moves. To be fully supportive [of the military spouse community], you need to bring folks in to stay with you for the long term,\u201d Gayton said. \u201cIt starts with culture. How does our company ensure its brand is inclusive to military spouses?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can we create a welcoming environment for military spouses at our organization?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which internal strategies create and support career progression for military spouses? What is our process for retaining a military spouse employee, if they are required to relocate to a new location with the military?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How does our organization collaborate with nonprofits like Hiring Our Heroes to scale our military spouse hiring efforts?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can our company leverage MSCAP?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What strategic partnerships may benefit our
