The program\u2019s curriculum sets veterans up for long-term success, according to one U.S. Marine Corps veteran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wouldn\u2019t be where I am today without the Corporate Fellowship Program,\u201d said Chris Cockrell, Procurement Engineering Manager at Lockheed Martin. \u201cAfter a few promotions and taking new internal opportunities, I manage the team I joined as an individual contributor five years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/army-veteran-coo-at-morgan-stanley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fellowship Helps 30-Year Army Veteran to \u2018Test the Waters Without the Risk\u2019 at Morgan Stanley<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hiring Our Heroes\u2019 Corporate Fellowship Program (CFP) is a U.S. Department of Defense-authorized SkillBridge program for transitioning service members during their final months on active duty. Participating fellows receive management training and hands-on experience in the civilian workforce to prepare them for a smooth transition to civilian careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 7,894 fellows have completed CFP since its launch in 2015. The program has grown exponentially with participants from all service branches, including Space Force, Coast Guard and National Guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, the Hiring Our Heroes\u2019 program boosts an 85% job offer rate and the average starting salary is $105,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uTSrx151ki8\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before the Fellowship <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program\u2019s success caught Cockrell\u2019s attention during a presentation at Marine Corps Base Quantico in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe thing that stuck out to me was the number of Fortune 500 companies participating and the job placement rate,\u201d Cockrell recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Marines-wearing-military-gear.jpeg\" alt=\"Marines stand with gear and weapons\" class=\"wp-image-5643\" width=\"407\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Marines-wearing-military-gear.jpeg 814w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Marines-wearing-military-gear-300x168.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Marines-wearing-military-gear-768x431.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Before joining Lockheed Martin, Chris Cockrell served in the U.S. Marine Corps.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not long after completing a fellowship and transitioning out of the Marine Corps, Cockrell joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartinjobs.com\/military\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lockheed Martin<\/a> (LM). He\u2019s been working there ever since. In his time with LM, Cockrell earned a Master of Business Administration degree and advanced through more challenging roles within the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I joined Lockheed Martin, the senior leadership took me under their wing and taught me a lot,\u201d Cockrell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he wouldn\u2019t have had this opportunity at LM without CFP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would not have been viewed competitively or got my first job without Hiring Our Heroes,\u201d Cockrell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CFP Key Takeaway: Research the Company<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/career-services\/fellowships\/internships\/cfp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Corporate Fellowship Program<\/a> curriculum exposes participants to various companies and industries. The information helps the veteran \u201cknow what you\u2019re getting into\u201d before your first day on the job, Cockrell pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cockrell is quick to say, \u201cthe stars aligned\u201d when he was introduced to Lockheed Martin through the Corporate Fellowship Program. But his decision to seek employment at LM wasn\u2019t impulsive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLockheed Martin was on my list for a while. Regardless of your background, this company has a career path for anyone ranging from data analytics to manufacturing,\u201d Cockrell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, he continues to serve the military in a new capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have been able to work with a customer who wears the same uniform I used to wear. That\u2019s pretty special,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cockrell recommends transitioning service members focus on the company, not a role, because a civilian employer\u2019s promotion curve may be steeper and advance quicker than a promotional ladder within the military ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe cream rises to the top, right? At any organization if you perform well, learn your job and advocate for yourself, you\u2019re going to be taken care of. I find that to be the case at Lockheed Martin,\u201d Cockrell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CFP Key Takeaway: Never Stop Networking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Cockrell prepared to separate from the military, he didn\u2019t understand the benefits of networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMeeting people, and keeping in contact with them, is how the \u2018civilian\u2019 world works. If you don\u2019t have those relationships, you\u2019re not going to get your foot in the door,\u201d Cockrell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And networking doesn\u2019t end with your job offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cockrell\u2019s salary has nearly doubled, and he\u2019s transitioned into a management role since graduating from CFP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s all credited to building and maintaining strong professional relationships,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CFP Key Takeaway: Mentor Today\u2019s Veterans Through Their Transitions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his spare time, Cockrell mentors Marines preparing for their transitions. He estimates he has helped around 15 veterans in the last five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs veterans, we sometimes do ourselves a disservice by not aggressively trying to help that service member that\u2019s going to get out of the military soon. Maybe it\u2019s because we don\u2019t know how to help,\u201d Cockrell said. \u201cI feel fortunate to be part of the Corporate Fellowship Program, and I try to pay it forward as much as I
