Instead of enrolling in college, 17-year-old Nguyen enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps even though no one in his family had served in the Armed Forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wanted a challenge. I wanted to do something serving a different purpose, a greater purpose,\u201d Nguyen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large\" style=\"margin-right: 25px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"329\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nick-Nguyen-wearing-Marine-uniform-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Young Marine in uniform\" class=\"wp-image-7417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nick-Nguyen-wearing-Marine-uniform-edited.jpg 329w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nick-Nguyen-wearing-Marine-uniform-edited-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nick Nguyen told his parents he didn\u2019t want \u201cto pursue an academic path\u201d like his siblings. Instead of enrolling in college, 17-year-old Nguyen enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps even though no one in his family had served in the Armed Forces.  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He served as a tactical network specialist and earned the rank of sergeant in four years. After the military, Nguyen returned home to Ohio and enrolled in college. Using his military benefits, he earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in information technology with a minor in network administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCollege was the formal training for what I did in the Marines,\u201d Nguyen said. Next, he boldly moved to North Carolina without a job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-metlife-recognized-my-talents\"><strong>MetLife Recognized My Talents<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luckily, as Nguyen was moving south, MetLife was breaking ground on a 26.5-acre global technology campus in Cary, North Carolina, and looking to build a diverse, highly skilled workforce. In one of those in-the-right-place-at-the-right-time moments, Nguyen perfectly positioned himself to get his foot in the door at one of the world\u2019s leading financial services companies. MetLife hired Nguyen as an entry-level software engineer with a college degree and no work experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMetLife really supported me. They recognized my talents and were willing to coach me,\u201d Nguyen told Hiring Our Heroes. \u201cThey kept offering me new opportunities and responsibilities every step of the way. They saw my potential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight years after joining MetLife, Nguyen now leads a team of engineers and technologists. And he pays it forward by coaching and mentoring others \u201cto reach their full potential\u201d at MetLife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt my heart, I\u2019m a true leader, who is passionate about building technology that changes people\u2019s lives for the better,\u201d he said. Nguyen added that he attributes his professional success to working at MetLife, a company where managers provide the tools and support needed for long-term success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, MetLife joined efforts with Hiring Our Heroes to further promote and enhance its military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metlifecareers.com\/ml\/SearchJobs\/?7623=*5B121638*5D&amp;7623_format=5177&amp;listFilterMode=1&amp;folderRecordsPerPage=6&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hiring efforts<\/a> in the company\u2019s Global Technology and Operations (GTO) organization in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-metlife-values-veterans\"><strong>MetLife Values Veterans<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nguyen volunteers with the MetLife Military Veterans Network (MVET). It is an employee-founded and employee-run resource group dedicated to promoting social \u200bresponsibility, patriotism, and enhancing MetLife&#8217;s diverse environment. Choosing to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps rather than enroll in college, Nick became a tactical network specialist.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For companies interested in hiring veterans and nurturing their potential, like MetLife, Nguyen encourages talent acquisition specialists and human resources team members to \u201clook at a veteran in terms of what they can do\u201d instead of evaluating the veteran solely on their work experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans want to be challenged, and they are quick to learn. They come to the table with integrity, a good work ethic, and other skills hard to find in a lot of people in the market for a job today. Just give veterans the opportunity to translate their military skills in your workplace. They will connect the dots,\u201d Nguyen said. \u201cAnd just do it. Hire a veteran, and do it frequently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe key to my success has been a good support system. If you don\u2019t have a support system, ask for help. If you reach out and build a network, great things will happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Nick Nguyen<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-build-a-network-great-things-will-happen\"><strong>If You Build a Network, Great Things Will Happen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For his fellow veterans looking for employment with a military-friendly company, Nguyen told them to turn to their support system for guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe key to my success has been a good support system,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t have a support system, ask for help. There are great people out there who are willing to lend their time and talents. If you reach out and build a network, great things will happen.
