It can look like a remote role that moves with a family, a flexible position that supports caregiving responsibilities, or contract work that creates space for continued learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Army National Guard spouse Megan Rowley,&nbsp;success&nbsp;is&nbsp;defined by one guiding&nbsp;principle:&nbsp;service to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-navigating-the-challenges-of-military-life-nbsp\">Navigating the Challenges of Military Life&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over&nbsp;13&nbsp;years as a military spouse,&nbsp;Megan&nbsp;experienced frequent moves and&nbsp;often managed&nbsp;household&nbsp;responsibilities&nbsp;on her own,&nbsp;making&nbsp;a consistent career path difficult.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But like many military spouses, she&nbsp;didn\u2019t&nbsp;let&nbsp;those challenges&nbsp;limit her&nbsp;growth.&nbsp;Instead, she found ways to keep&nbsp;learning,&nbsp;building skills,&nbsp;and&nbsp;showing up for her community.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driven by a genuine desire to give back, Megan&nbsp;served&nbsp;as a military family readiness leader and volunteered with&nbsp;several&nbsp;military service organizations. Through these experiences, she discovered a&nbsp;passion for community engagement and supporting military families.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her journey highlights an important\u00a0truth:\u00a0volunteering\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0just about giving\u00a0back\u2014it can also be\u00a0a\u00a0powerful career\u00a0strategy.\u00a0For military spouses navigating resume\u00a0gaps\u00a0or career pivots,\u00a0strategic volunteer roles can help build\u00a0in-demand skills,\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0leadership,\u00a0and\u00a0expand\u00a0professional networks\u00a0across duty stations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-turning-passion-into-purpose-nbsp\">Turning Passion into Purpose&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One issue that deeply resonated with Megan was military food insecurity. Determined to make an impact, she began advocating for an on-base food pantry at Joint&nbsp;Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To strengthen her ability to lead this effort, Megan pursued a fellowship with Dog Tag Bakery and earned a Certificate in Business Administration from Georgetown University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fellowship and the certificate program strengthened both my skills and my resolve to see an on-base food pantry open up at JBAB,\u201d Megan shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her commitment eventually led her to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillvets.org\/hillvets-lead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HillVets LEAD<\/a>, where she connected with an HOH military spouse program leader and learned more about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation\u2019s work advancing military-connected employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose experiences helped clarify my long-term vision: advancing quality-of-life improvements for military-connected individuals and families,\u201d Megan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-power-of-connection-nbsp\">The Power of Connection&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With her mission solidified, Megan knew she needed the right network and resources to take her advocacy further. She attended the HOH <a href=\"\/career-services\/education-networking\/amplify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amplify<\/a> program and <a href=\"https:\/\/events.uschamberfoundation.org\/mses-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Military Spouse Employment Summit<\/a> in Washington, D.C., where introductions from the HOH team helped her work to advance the JBAB food pantry initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose connections proved lasting and impactful,\u201d Megan said. \u201cThey strengthened my work advocating around military food insecurity and ultimately helped lead to my role at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-career-built-on-service-nbsp\">A Career Built on Service&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1016\" height=\"761\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Megan-Rowley_JBAB-Food-Pantry.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25066\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3350882856929993;width:323px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Megan-Rowley_JBAB-Food-Pantry.jpg 1016w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Megan-Rowley_JBAB-Food-Pantry-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Megan-Rowley_JBAB-Food-Pantry-768x575.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1016px) 100vw, 1016px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Amplify, Megan\u2019s momentum continued. She was accepted into the University of San Francisco\u2019s Master\u2019s in Public Leadership program as a Newmark Fellow. After two years of dedicated advocacy, her vision became a reality when the JBAB Food Pantry officially opened its doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around the same time, HOH connected her to an open role at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, an opportunity that aligned directly with her passion and experience.
