While the answer evolved over time, one idea consistently stood out: a desire to work at Walt Disney World, an organization known for creating meaningful experiences and bringing stories to life. That interest would eventually help guide&nbsp;John\u2019s transition from military&nbsp;service&nbsp;to&nbsp;a&nbsp;civilian career filled with purpose and possibility.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-follow-the-pixie-dust\">Follow the Pixie Dust<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he approached the final years of his air transportation and logistics career, John began seriously confronting the question: <em>what\u2019s next?<\/em> Like many transitioning service members, he faced uncertainty about where he could thrive, how to map a path forward, and whether his military experience would be valued in the civilian workforce.<a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt that point, you\u2019re always thinking, \u2018Is anybody actually going to hire this guy?\u2019\u201d John admitted. \u201cA lot of people out there say veterans are super valuable, but do real companies truly believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he began thinking through his&nbsp;next move&nbsp;and the value&nbsp;he could bring&nbsp;to an organization, John saw new possibility in an idea he had carried with him for years. His family loved&nbsp;Disney,&nbsp;not just for the attractions, but for&nbsp;its&nbsp;commitment&nbsp;to guest service and&nbsp;creating magical moments.&nbsp;He understood&nbsp;Disney magic&nbsp;is created&nbsp;by engaged, dedicated employees, and the idea&nbsp;of&nbsp;becoming one of them&nbsp;began to feel&nbsp;like a&nbsp;fairy-tale-worthy&nbsp;next&nbsp;chapter.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He just wasn\u2019t sure how to make it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-imagination-takes-root\">Imagination Takes Root<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:30% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/JohnMelendez_Disney_orlando.jpg\" alt=\"John Melendez and his wife pose in front of EPCOT's Spaceship Earth\" class=\"wp-image-24474 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/JohnMelendez_Disney_orlando.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/JohnMelendez_Disney_orlando-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the dream came into focus, John set out to make it a reality. In the year leading up to retirement, he approached his transition with the same discipline that defined his military career. He pursued civilian-recognized credentials including Project Management Professional (PMP) and Agile certifications, attended the Transition Assistance Program (TAP), optimized his LinkedIn presence, expanded his professional network, and worked closely with base personnel and Veterans Affairs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the most important aspects of my transition out was getting certifications,\u201d John shared. \u201cThey shored up my confidence and helped translate my military experience into civilian terms without needing extra explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But preparation wasn\u2019t just about marking items off from an out-processing checklist. John realized a successful transition would also require reimagining who he was beyond the uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-redefining-identity-in-transition\">Redefining Identity in Transition\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John set an intentional goal to leave behind his military identity and rediscover who he was outside the Air Force, something he\u2019d seen many veterans struggle with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDemilitarizing was&nbsp;critical for me,\u201d John&nbsp;said. \u201cMy goal was to remake my identity from Master Sergeant Melendez into \u2018just John\u2019 so I could actually be successful.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He described the process as twofold: an internal reset based on self-reflection and humility, and an external reinvention that reshaped his resume, LinkedIn profile, networking approach, and interviewing style. Recognizing it as a critical part of his transition, he sought to make the most of the opportunity, ultimately connecting with Hiring Our Heroes (HOH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHOH connects veterans with companies genuinely interested in hiring military talent,\u201d John explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John shared that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/career-services\/fellowships\/internships\/cfp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HOH\u2019s Corporate Fellowship Program<\/a>&nbsp;became&nbsp;his&nbsp;pathway to&nbsp;The Walt Disney Company.&nbsp;With the support of his&nbsp;regional&nbsp;program&nbsp;manager,&nbsp;John connected with Disney leaders and participated in&nbsp;informational interviews&nbsp;before fellowship resumes were released.&nbsp;Those early connections paid off, and&nbsp;he&nbsp;secured&nbsp;multiple interviews&nbsp;and five offers&nbsp;from various organizations, including&nbsp;Disney.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thrilled with&nbsp;multiple opportunities,&nbsp;John remained committed to pursuing an opportunity with Disney and accepted a&nbsp;fellowship&nbsp;with Walt Disney World Resort&nbsp;as an environmental&nbsp;sustainability&nbsp;manager.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-happily-ever-after\">A Happily Ever After<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John\u2019s diligence and initiative during his fellowship stood out. Just two weeks after his official retirement, John transitioned into a full-time role as a quality and process improvement manager for Disney Cruise Line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While initially new to the cruise industry, today John applies his military-honed skills of managing projects, leading teams, optimizing processes, and translating complex information into clear, organized presentations to help him be successful in his role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been able to leverage my military background while learning a new industry,\u201d he shared. \u201cMany of the skills I learned in the military, I use on a regular basis here at Disney.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John\u2019s story is a reminder that dream transitions don\u2019t just magically happen.
