{"id":2190,"date":"2021-03-31T06:31:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T13:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/?p=2190"},"modified":"2021-04-20T10:18:20","modified_gmt":"2021-04-20T17:18:20","slug":"2020-sweepstakes-winner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/stories\/2020-sweepstakes-winner\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Who Gives Away a Car?\u2019 Hiring Our Heroes Surprises Army Veteran with Toyota 4Runner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ernest Knight, a third-generation veteran who served in the U.S. Army, was presented with a 2021 Toyota 4Runner from Hiring Our Heroes during a ceremony on March 30, 2021, at the DeLuca Toyota\u202fdealership in Ocala, Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knight&nbsp;was&nbsp;awarded the vehicle as a result of his winning entry into the annual<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uschamberfoundation.org\/press-release\/hiring-our-heroes-presents-us-army-veteran-toyota-4runner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Committed to America\u2019s Heroes sweepstakes<\/a> conducted late last&nbsp;year. The&nbsp;sweepstakes was open to all active duty, reserve and guard members, veterans, and military spouses, and&nbsp;more than 85,000 entries were received.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am really grateful and it makes me so excited to know that I won a Toyota. It\u2019s such an amazing feeling that I don\u2019t even have the words to describe how I feel,\u201d Knight said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I Got the Help I Needed From the VA\u2019s Voc-Rehab Program<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally from Portsmouth, Virginia, Knight, 31,\u202fenlisted in the U.S. Army in 2013 and worked as a food service specialist.\u00a0While deployed to Kuwait during Operation Enduring Freedom, Knight suffered an injury and was honorably discharged\u202fat the rank of specialist\u202fin 2015.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy plan was to stay in and retire with the military, but being injured changed my course. So, I had to figure out what I was going to do,\u201d Knight said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"164\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/edited-Ernest-Knight-in-Army-uniform-164x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2079\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/edited-Ernest-Knight-in-Army-uniform-164x300.jpg 164w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/edited-Ernest-Knight-in-Army-uniform.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><figcaption>Ernest Knight during his active-duty service.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knight described his military transition as difficult. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With help from the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Department of Veterans Affairs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefits.va.gov\/vocrehab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Veteran Readiness\u202fand Employment <\/a>program\u202fin Salem, Virginia,\u202fKnight received support to guide him during his military transition. The program paid his college tuition and Knight went on to earn his bachelor\u2019s degree in criminal justice with a minor in psychology from Radford University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After completing his bachelor\u2019s degree, Knight moved to Florida. He didn\u2019t know anyone that lived there, but he wanted to live in a warmer climate. Ocala, Florida gave him what he was looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making Other People Happy, Makes Me Happy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many ways, Knight remains in transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He got engaged to his fianc\u00e9, Julio on July 4, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their wedding plans have been put on hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ernest-at-DisneyWorld-1024x690.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ernest-at-DisneyWorld-1024x690.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ernest-at-DisneyWorld-300x202.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ernest-at-DisneyWorld-768x518.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ernest-at-DisneyWorld-1536x1035.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ernest-at-DisneyWorld.jpeg 1921w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using his GI Bill benefit, Knight completed his master\u2019s degree in criminal justice with an emphasis in critical incident management from Saint Leo University in December 2020. While his famed diploma hangs in his home, the graduation ceremony has been pushed back until May 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knight wants to work at a federal agency, like FEMA, TSA, the VA, or Homeland Security, but he hasn\u2019t been able to secure federal employment. His application is in the system. He is waiting for an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne [job] that I\u2019m particularly interested in is educational specialist, especially with the Army. I feel like I can really be a benefit there,\u201d he said. \u201cI&#8217;ve been in the Army so I can relate with other soldiers and veterans in regards to helping them with pursuing a career or even education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, Knight is a Zumba instructor at a local sports club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love Zumba mainly because I love dancing,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s all about having fun and there&#8217;s no mistakes in Zumba &#8212; at least that\u2019s what I tell my students. It&#8217;s amazing how much you can tone your body and have a good time while doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ernest-Knight-Zumba-instructor-1024x1003.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2081\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ernest-Knight-Zumba-instructor-1024x1003.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ernest-Knight-Zumba-instructor-300x294.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ernest-Knight-Zumba-instructor-768x752.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ernest-Knight-Zumba-instructor.jpeg 1323w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zumba provides Knight with opportunities to make a positive impact in his community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI help brighten their lives, even if it&#8217;s just for one hour,\u201d he said. \u201cMaking other people happy, makes me happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who Gives Away a Car?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knight was up late one night scrolling through his inbox when he saw an email from the VA about Hiring Our Heroes\u2019 Committed to America\u2019s Heroes sweepstakes. He kept scrolling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was like, \u2018No, that&#8217;s not real.\u2019 Who gives away a car?\u201d Knight said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, Knight saw the sweepstake announcement in another email from the VA. This time, he stopped and doubtfully entered the sweepstakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI remember I told my fianc\u00e9 that I doubt I&#8217;m going to get it because it will never happen. And surprisingly, it happened,\u201d Knight said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the third time that Hiring Our Heroes has awarded a Toyota to a member of the military community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHiring Our Heroes is proudly celebrating its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/10-years-hoh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tenth year of impact<\/a>.
